What is a TPMS reset procedure?

This is a procedure set by the car manufacturer to reset the TPMS system. A TPMS system communicates with her sensors within the wheel  on the basis of their ID numbers. This are 4 identical ID numbers for each TPMS sensor. Due to replacement of the sensors, for whatever reason,  the ECU of a vehicle will see different ID numbers. To be able to learn new ID numbers you will need to perform the reset procedure.

There are difference ways to perform a reset, again, those are set by the car manufacturer. These can be divided into three categories:

Auto re-learn:

Vehicles with a self-learning TPMS system, which need only to be driven, so the TPMS system will adjust itself. The wheels can also be changed mutually, because the system itself will recognize the position of the wheel and the associated sensor.

Semi auto-re-learn.

Vehicles with a semi self-learning TPMS system, whereby the system needs to be put into the reset stance by the onboard computer, whereafter the sensors needs to be triggered with a TPMS tool. Sometimes you will also need to drive to complete the reset procedure.  The wheels can also be changed mutually, because the system itself will recognize the position of the wheel and the assoiciated sensor.

OBDII re-learn.

Vehicles with the OBDII connection have to use a TPMS tool to overwrite the old data with the new data. With this you also overwrite any errors. The wheels can not change position without redoing the entire procedure.
